Having joined the Indian railways as an apprentice junior engineer in diesel mechanical engineering, I am experiencing the collective responsibilities of a team, leadership qualities of a leader to tackle extreme situations and easily communicating with people of diverse languages and culture.
Our training phase made us go to the Siliguri Diesel Locomotive Shed to get the on-job training of 09 months there. This shed is India's oldest meter gauge diesel loco shed. Established in 1961, the first loco it commissioned was a YDM4 locomotive, a designation given to all MG locos. The broad gauge locos were commissioned from 2007 onwards. It is the second diesel shed to house EMD locos.
According to statistics taken from 2010, the the number of officers were 03, while the number of supervisors i.e., JEs and SSE's (JE : Junior Engineer , SSE: Senior Section Engineers) were 44. The percentage of railway employees housed in the railway quarters was 50.37%. Looking at the educational profile, we could say that 2% were qualified upto the 8th standard, 5% just above 8th standard, 28% passed the 10th standard, 30% were from 10-12th standard, 15% were ITI qualified while 20% were graduates.
The performance parameters indicated that the specific fuel consumption (SFC) was 2.12 for freight trains while for passengers it was 3.78. The lube oil consumption was 3.41 ltrs/100 earned kms for freight trains while for passenger trains it was 3.3 ltrs/100 earned kms.
At present the holding capacity of the Siliguri Diesel Loco Shed is 125 for goods train and 70 for passenger train giving a total of 195 locomotives. This number was 91 in 2010. This indicates an increasing functioning and effectiveness of the Siliguri Diesel Loco shed in maintaining the locomotives. This shed started the periodic overhauling of YDM4 locos in 1995 and upto 2010, a total of 190 locos were overhauled. This reduced the dependency of N.F. Railways on the gross overhauling costs.
